The real launch point for Serengeti safaris and Zanzibar

While Zanzibar and the Serengeti get the postcards, Dar es Salaam's airport is the mainland gateway most international travelers actually pass through first — connecting onward via short domestic flights to safari airstrips and to Zanzibar's beaches, making it the genuine logistical hub behind Tanzania's biggest tourist draws.

Julius Nyerere International Airport (IATA: DAR) is Tanzania’s main international gateway and the base of Precision Air. DAR handled about 2.9 million passengers in 2024, split roughly evenly between domestic and international traffic. It sits about 12 km southwest of central Dar es Salaam.

Overview

DAR operates around Terminal 3, opened in 2013, and functions as the genuine logistical hub behind Tanzania’s biggest tourism draws. While the Serengeti’s wildlife and Zanzibar’s beaches get most of the attention, the majority of international travelers headed to either actually connect through Dar es Salaam first, via short domestic flights onward to safari airstrips or island airports.

Terminals

DAR operates around Terminal 3 (opened 2013), the modern main terminal handling both domestic and international traffic, including Precision Air’s regional network.

Airlines

Precision Air, Tanzania’s leading domestic carrier, operates its main base at DAR, with an extensive network of short domestic flights to safari airstrips in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro regions, as well as to Zanzibar. A range of international carriers also serve Dar es Salaam directly from Europe, the Middle East, and elsewhere in Africa, making it the practical starting point for most Tanzania itineraries.

Getting There

  • Taxi: 25,000–40,000 TZS to central Dar es Salaam, about 25–35 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Uber / Bolt: Generally comparable in price to a taxi, about 25–35 minutes — widely used in Dar es Salaam.

Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always check current fares with your rideshare app.

Security and Passport Control Wait Times

  • Regional flights: Security plus immigration for most East African routes. Typically 20–30 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 35–50 minutes during busy periods.
  • International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 25–35 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 40–60 minutes during peak international departure banks.
  • DAR sees significant seasonal variation tied to safari and beach tourism high season — budget extra time during peak months.

Parking

The terminal has adjacent short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage.

Wifi

Free wifi is available in the terminal with a time-limited free session.

Best Times to Arrive

  • Regional flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
  • International flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure, especially during peak international departure periods.
  • If connecting onward to a domestic safari or Zanzibar flight, build in real buffer time — DAR’s domestic terminal operations can be less predictable than the main international side.

Where to Eat

DAR has a good selection of Tanzanian and Swahili coast cuisine alongside international chains, spread across the terminal.

Airport Hotel

DAR doesn’t have a hotel on-site yet. The Tanzania Airports Authority announced plans back in 2022 for a four-star hotel and commercial complex at the airport through a public-private partnership, and procurement has since started — but for now, plan on a hotel in the city, with most offering airport shuttles timed to flights.

Lounges

Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are available for eligible passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.

Duty-Free Shopping

DAR’s duty-free area includes genuinely Tanzanian specialties — tanzanite jewelry (found only in Tanzania) and Tanzanian coffee — alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Layover Tips

  • With 4 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry, central Dar es Salaam is reachable by taxi or rideshare in about 25–35 minutes.
  • If your onward trip is to the Serengeti or Zanzibar, confirm your domestic connecting flight details well in advance — small aircraft, limited daily frequencies, and strict luggage weight limits are common on these routes.
  • Given DAR’s role as Tanzania’s real logistical gateway, most well-planned safari or Zanzibar itineraries build in a buffer day here rather than a tight same-day connection.
