Meet Blucifer, the 32-foot blue mustang

A 32-foot fiberglass blue mustang sculpture named "Mustang" by artist Luis Jiménez — nicknamed "Blucifer" for its glowing red eyes — greets drivers at DEN's entrance. It's one of the most photographed (and debated) pieces of public art at any US airport.

Denver International Airport (IATA: DEN) is one of the busiest airports in the world and a major United Airlines hub, handling more than 80 million passengers a year. It’s also the largest airport in the United States by land area — nearly 53 square miles, bigger than the city of Manhattan several times over — sitting about 40 km (25 mi) northeast of downtown Denver.

Overview

DEN is instantly recognizable for its Jeppesen Terminal roof: a series of white tensile peaks meant to evoke the nearby Rocky Mountains. The terminal connects to three concourses (A, B, and C) via an underground train, and the whole complex sits on such a vast stretch of Colorado prairie that the drive in from downtown genuinely takes longer than at most US airports. DEN served a record 82.3 million passengers in 2024, up 5.8% on 2023 — the first year in its history topping 80 million.

Terminals

DEN operates a single central Jeppesen Terminal with three concourses reached by an underground automated train:

  • Concourse A: A mix of domestic and international gates, connected directly to the Jeppesen Terminal by a pedestrian bridge as well as the train.
  • Concourse B: United Airlines’ primary concourse, the largest of the three given United’s major hub operation here.
  • Concourse C: Southwest, Frontier, and other domestic carriers.

Airlines

United Airlines operates one of its largest domestic hubs at DEN, anchoring Concourse B with an extensive network across the western and central US. Southwest Airlines also runs a significant operation here, and Frontier Airlines — headquartered in Denver — uses DEN as its primary base for low-cost domestic routes.

How to Get There

  • RTD A Line train: $10.50 one-way, running every 15 minutes and taking about 37 minutes direct to Union Station in downtown Denver — the fastest and most predictable option given the airport’s distance.
  • Taxi: Typically $55–75 to downtown, about 45–60 minutes — DEN is one of the farthest major US airports from its city center, so fares run higher than you might expect.
  • Uber / Lyft: Generally $45–65 depending on demand and time of day, about 45–60 minutes.

Prices above are indicative and can change — always check current fares with RTD Denver or your ride-hailing app.

Getting Through Security and Passport Control

Like other US airports, DEN has no departure passport control — only TSA security screening, for both domestic and international departures:

  • Domestic departures (TSA only): Typically 20–25 minutes off-peak, up to 30–45 minutes during busy periods.
  • International departures (TSA only): Similar TSA process to domestic, typically 25–35 minutes off-peak, up to 40–60 minutes at peak — DEN’s international operation is smaller than its domestic one, so lines are generally more manageable than at bigger international gateways.
  • Arriving internationally? Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing happens on arrival, separate from departure security.

Parking

DEN has extensive parking directly at the Jeppesen Terminal plus more affordable economy lots connected by shuttle — given the airport’s sheer size, booking online in advance and allowing extra time for the shuttle is worth it, especially in winter when Denver’s occasional snowstorms can slow everything down.

Wifi

Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the terminal and all three concourses with no time limit.

Best Times to Arrive

  • Domestic flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure — DEN’s distance from the city and its size mean the buffer matters more than at a compact urban airport.
  • International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead, especially for the airport’s growing roster of long-haul routes.
  • Denver’s weather can shift fast, especially in winter — build in extra time for the drive out if snow is forecast, since DEN’s exposed location on the plains means it can see conditions the city itself doesn’t.

Where to Eat

DEN has a strong lineup of Colorado craft beer bars and local dining concepts alongside national chains, spread across all three concourses — a noticeably more local-flavored food scene than many similarly sized US hubs. Inside the Westin, Grill & Vine runs a farm-to-table-inspired menu for breakfast and dinner, and Ingredients covers Starbucks coffee and grab-and-go for a quicker option.

Airport Hotel

The Westin Denver International Airport is built directly onto the Jeppesen Terminal, connected via a bridge over the train station — no shuttle needed. Beyond Grill & Vine and Ingredients, it has the Sky Lounge for cocktails and light bites, a genuinely convenient stop for an early-morning flight given how far the airport sits from downtown.

Lounges

  • United Club locations are concentrated in Concourse B, reflecting United’s major hub presence, accessible with eligible tickets, elite status, or membership.
  • Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available across the concourses.

Duty-Free Shopping

DEN’s shopping selection includes Colorado-themed gifts and outdoor gear alongside the standard airport mix of fashion, cosmetics, and electronics, spread across all three concourses.

Long Layover Tips

  • With 6+ hours, the RTD A Line makes downtown Denver’s LoDo neighborhood and Union Station genuinely reachable — but budget the full round-trip time given the 37-minute ride each way.
  • If staying airside, Concourse B has the best mix of United Club lounges and dining given United’s hub presence.
  • Before you head to the curb, don’t skip a photo with Blucifer near the terminal entrance — it’s become one of DEN’s defining landmarks, for better or worse.
