Kuwait International Airport (IATA: KWI) is Kuwait’s main airport and the primary hub of Kuwait Airways. KWI handled 15.4 million passengers in 2024, a slight 1% dip from 2023’s 15.6 million even as overall aviation-sector revenue grew. It sits about 16 km south of central Kuwait City.
Overview
KWI operates two terminals — the original Terminal 1 and a massive new Terminal 2, designed by the renowned architecture firm Foster + Partners. The new terminal is one of the largest single airport terminal buildings ever constructed, a genuinely significant addition that has repositioned Kuwait as a serious competitor among the Gulf’s major aviation hubs.
Terminals
- Terminal 1: The original terminal, handling a portion of Kuwait Airways’ operations and other carriers.
- Terminal 2: The new, architecturally significant terminal, among the largest single terminal buildings in the world.
Airlines
Kuwait Airways, the national carrier, operates its principal hub at KWI, with an extensive regional network across the Middle East alongside international routes to Europe, Asia, and North America. That network, combined with the new terminal’s expanded capacity, positions KWI as an increasingly significant connecting point in the Gulf region.
Getting There
- Taxi: 5–8 KWD to central Kuwait City via the fixed-rate counter inside arrivals, about 20–25 minutes.
- Ride-hailing: Generally comparable in price to a taxi, about 20–25 minutes. Uber and Careem both operate in Kuwait.
Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always check current fares with the taxi counter or your ride-hailing app.
Security and Passport Control Wait Times
- Regional flights: Security plus immigration for most Gulf routes. Typically 15–20 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 25–35 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 20–30 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 35–50 minutes during peak international departure banks.
- The new Terminal 2’s expanded capacity has generally improved processing times compared to the older facility.
Parking
Both terminals have adjacent short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage.
Wifi
Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the airport with no time limit.
Best Times to Arrive
- Regional flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure, especially during Kuwait Airways’ peak departure banks.
- Given the scale of the new Terminal 2, allow extra time to navigate the building, especially for first-time visitors.
Where to Eat
KWI has a good selection of Kuwaiti and wider Gulf cuisine alongside international chains, spread across both terminals.
Airport Hotel
The Safir Airport Hotel is genuinely inside KWI’s restricted customs zone, between the Main Terminal and the Amiri Terminal — reachable via a free shuttle from the transit counter rather than on foot, about a 10-minute ride. Under Kuwaiti air transport law, passengers facing an 8+ hour connection are entitled to a free room here, courtesy of their airline.
Lounges
- The Kuwait Airways Lounge is available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.
Duty-Free Shopping
KWI’s duty-free area includes perfumes and dates alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Layover Tips
- With 4 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry, central Kuwait City is reachable by taxi in about 20–25 minutes.
- If staying airside, take the time to appreciate Terminal 2’s architecture — it’s a genuinely significant piece of modern airport design, not just another glass box.
- Given the terminal’s scale, confirm which building your flight uses well ahead of time, and allow extra buffer for navigating between areas if connecting.
