King Khalid International Airport (IATA: RUH) is Saudi Arabia’s capital gateway and a major hub for both Saudia and low-cost carrier flynas, handling more than 35 million passengers a year and growing fast. It sits about 35 km (22 mi) north of central Riyadh.

Overview

RUH operates five terminals and is undergoing significant expansion as part of Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 development plans. The airport is set to become the home base of Riyadh Air, an entirely new national carrier being built essentially from scratch — one of the most ambitious airline launches anywhere in commercial aviation in recent memory, reflecting Riyadh’s ambitions to become a major global aviation hub alongside Dubai and Doha. RUH served more than 37 million passengers in 2024, a new annual record and the world’s top-ranked airport for on-time departure performance that year.

Terminals

RUH operates five terminals (T1 through T5), handling a mix of domestic and international flights across Saudia, flynas, and international carriers, with significant expansion underway to support the airport’s rapidly growing traffic.

Airlines

Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s flag carrier, operates a major hub at RUH alongside Jeddah, connecting the capital to an extensive domestic network plus international routes across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and beyond. flynas, a fast-growing low-cost carrier, is also based at RUH with an extensive domestic and regional network.

How to Get There

  • Taxi: SAR 60–90 to central Riyadh, about 30–40 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Uber / Careem: Generally comparable in price to a taxi, about 30–40 minutes — both apps are widely used in Riyadh.

Prices above are indicative and can change — always check current fares with your ride-hailing app.

Getting Through Security and Passport Control

  • Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 20–30 minutes off-peak, up to 35–50 minutes during busy periods.
  • International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 25–40 minutes off-peak, up to 45–65 minutes during peak international departure banks.
  • Given RUH’s rapid growth and ongoing expansion, processing times can vary as new facilities come online — build in a little extra buffer time.

Parking

RUH has parking available across its terminals, with clear signage for short- and long-stay options.

Wifi

Free wifi is available in the terminals for travelers.

Best Times to Arrive

  • Domestic flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
  • International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead, especially for Saudia’s peak international departure banks.
  • Given the airport’s ongoing expansion and growth, allow extra buffer time as facilities and processes continue to be scaled up.

Where to Eat

RUH has a good selection of Saudi and broader international cuisine, reflecting the capital’s role as a major business and government center. At the on-site Radisson, Lune does chic all-day international dining, and Kazbah Café covers a more casual bite. Terminal 1’s Al Mamlaka Restaurant serves traditional Saudi dishes like lamb kebabs and shawarma.

Airport Hotel

The Radisson Hotel Riyadh Airport is genuinely on-site, making it a convenient option for an overnight layover without leaving the airport grounds. Beyond Lune and Kazbah Café, its location puts it close to Terminal 1’s food court for additional options.

Lounges

  • The Saudia Al Fursan lounges are available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
  • Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.

Duty-Free Shopping

RUH’s duty-free zone includes Arabic perfumes and dates, alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Long Layover Tips

  • With a valid Saudi visa and a long enough layover, central Riyadh’s business and cultural districts are reachable by taxi or rideshare in about 30–40 minutes.
  • If staying airside, the Al Fursan lounges offer a comfortable option for a longer wait.
  • Given the scale of RUH’s ongoing expansion as Saudi Arabia builds out Riyadh Air and its broader aviation ambitions, expect this airport to look noticeably different — and larger — within the next few years.
