Inside one of the world's most rigorously secured airports

Ben Gurion Airport is widely regarded by security professionals as having the most intensive and effective screening process of any major airport in the world. Rather than relying primarily on scanning technology, TLV's system is built around behavioral profiling and one-on-one passenger interviews conducted by trained security officers — an approach that airports and agencies worldwide have studied, even though it's difficult to replicate at larger, higher-volume hubs.

Ben Gurion International Airport (IATA: TLV) is Israel’s main international gateway and the hub of El Al. Traffic has fluctuated sharply in recent years: the Israel Airports Authority reported 13.8 million passengers in 2024, a 34% drop from 2023’s 21 million as many foreign carriers reduced or suspended service following the escalation of the regional conflict in October 2023. It sits about 20 km southeast of central Tel Aviv.

Overview

TLV operates two terminals and holds a distinction unlike almost any other major airport: it’s widely regarded by aviation security professionals as having the most rigorous and effective passenger screening process in the world. Rather than depending mainly on scanning equipment, the system is built around behavioral profiling and direct interviews conducted by trained officers — a model studied by security agencies internationally, even though its labor-intensive nature makes it difficult to scale to much larger airports.

Terminals

  • Terminal 3: The main international terminal, handling the vast majority of scheduled traffic including El Al’s full network.
  • Terminal 1: Used for a smaller share of low-cost and charter operations, connected to Terminal 3 by shuttle.

Airlines

El Al, Israel’s flag carrier, operates its hub at TLV, running an extensive international network connecting Israel to Europe, North America, and beyond. Arkia and Israir, Israel’s other major carriers, add further domestic and regional routes, including flights to Eilat and destinations across the Eastern Mediterranean.

Getting There

  • Israel Railways train: ~14–16 ILS, a direct service to Tel Aviv HaHagana station, about 20 minutes.
  • Sherut (shared taxi): ~20–30 ILS, a shared minibus that runs later than the train, about 25–30 minutes.
  • Taxi: Metered, with a fixed rate available to central Tel Aviv, typically ~130–160 ILS, about 20–25 minutes.

Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always check current fares with Israel Railways or your taxi option.

Security and Passport Control Wait Times

  • Regional flights: Security interviews plus screening for nearby routes. Typically 30–45 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 45–70 minutes during busy periods.
  • International flights: Extended security interviews plus passport control. Typically 45–60 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 70–100 minutes during peak departure banks.
  • TLV’s security process is notably more thorough — and often slower — than at most other major airports, reflecting its behavioral-profiling approach; build in real extra time.

Parking

Both terminals have adjacent short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage.

Wifi

Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the airport with no time limit.

Best Times to Arrive

  • Regional flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure.
  • International flights: Arrive 4 hours before departure — a notably longer recommendation than most airports, reflecting TLV’s extensive security interview process.
  • Given the depth of TLV’s screening, arriving early here matters more than at almost any other airport in this guide.

Where to Eat

TLV has a strong selection of Israeli and broader Middle Eastern cuisine alongside international chains, spread across the terminal.

Airport Hotel

TLV doesn’t have an on-site hotel yet — it would be the airport’s first. Brown Hotels has a building permit for a 5-star property near Terminal 3 with direct access to the passenger hall, but construction isn’t expected to start until the second half of 2027, so for now, plan on a hotel in Tel Aviv itself or one of the options near the airport perimeter.

Lounges

  • The El Al King David Lounge is available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
  • Several Dan Lounge and Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.

Duty-Free Shopping

TLV’s duty-free area includes genuinely Israeli specialties — Dead Sea cosmetics and Israeli wine — alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Layover Tips

  • With 6 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry, central Tel Aviv and its beaches are reachable via train in about 20 minutes — though TLV’s extensive security process on departure means a shorter layover is riskier here than at most airports.
  • If staying airside, TLV’s dining reflects Israel’s rich culinary mix — genuinely worth exploring even on a shorter connection.
  • Given TLV’s unusually thorough and sometimes unpredictable security interview process, build in significantly more buffer time than you would at a typical international hub, especially for connecting international flights.
