Vancouver International Airport (IATA: YVR) is Air Canada’s second-largest hub and Canada’s main gateway to Asia-Pacific, handling more than 26 million passengers a year. It sits about 12 km (7 mi) south of downtown Vancouver.
Overview
YVR operates domestic and international terminals connected internally, and is genuinely distinctive for its extensive collection of Indigenous Northwest Coast art displayed throughout the building — not a token gesture but a serious, deliberate curation that makes the terminal itself feel like a cultural destination. As Air Canada’s Pacific gateway, it anchors an extensive network across Canada plus major routes to Asia. YVR recorded its second-highest passenger count ever in 2024 at 26.2 million, a 5% increase on 2023 and just short of 2019’s pre-pandemic record of 26.3 million.
Terminals
YVR operates connected domestic and international terminal areas, with international arrivals and departures — including US-bound flights with border preclearance — handled in dedicated zones.
Airlines
Air Canada operates its second-largest hub at YVR, anchoring an extensive domestic network across Canada plus a major international portfolio focused on Asia-Pacific routes, reflecting Vancouver’s position as Canada’s westernmost major gateway. That concentration makes YVR one of the best-connected airports in North America for travel to and from Asia.
How to Get There
- Canada Line SkyTrain: CAD 9–11, a direct rail line running every few minutes to downtown Vancouver in about 25 minutes — fast, reliable, and unaffected by traffic.
- Taxi: Typically CAD 35–45 to downtown, about 25–35 minutes depending on traffic.
- Uber: Generally comparable in price to a taxi, about 25–35 minutes.
Prices above are indicative and can change — always check current fares with TransLink or your ride-hailing app.
Getting Through Security and Passport Control
- Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 15–20 minutes off-peak, up to 25–35 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control (US-bound flights clear US border preclearance here before departure). Typically 25–35 minutes off-peak, up to 40–60 minutes at peak.
- If you’re flying to the US, remember you’ll clear US customs and immigration at YVR itself — arrive at your gate on the US side already through both Canadian security and US preclearance.
Parking
Both terminal areas have adjacent short- and long-stay car parks. Pre-booking online is cheaper than the walk-up rate.
Wifi
Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the airport with no time limit.
Best Times to Arrive
- Domestic flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead, especially for US-bound flights that require full preclearance processing.
- If flying to the US, build in real extra time for preclearance specifically — it’s effectively a second, separate check beyond standard security.
Where to Eat
YVR reflects Vancouver’s strong food scene well, with a good selection of Pacific Northwest cuisine and fresh seafood alongside international chains. At the Fairmont, Globe@YVR serves Pacific Northwest dishes built around Ocean Wise-certified seafood with panoramic runway views, and Jetside Bar is a popular stop for a pre-flight drink.
Airport Hotel
The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is genuinely inside the terminal itself, positioned above the US departures and international arrivals areas — not a shuttle ride away. Beyond Globe@YVR and Jetside Bar, it’s one of the most convenient airport hotels anywhere for a red-eye arrival or an early long-haul departure.
Lounges
- The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge is available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access, reflecting Air Canada’s major hub presence.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.
Duty-Free Shopping
YVR’s duty-free zone includes Canadian specialties — ice wine and maple syrup — alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Long Layover Tips
- With 4+ hours and a visa situation permitting entry, downtown Vancouver and Stanley Park are reachable via the Canada Line in about 25 minutes.
- If staying airside, take time to genuinely look at the art around you — the collection here is considered one of the finest displays of Indigenous Northwest Coast art anywhere, not just an airport curiosity.
- If you’re connecting to a US flight, factor preclearance into your connection time as its own distinct step, not just part of normal security.
