Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA: CAN) is one of the busiest airports in Asia and mainland China’s largest carrier, China Southern Airlines, calls it home as its primary hub, handling more than 60 million passengers a year. It sits about 28 km (17 mi) north of central Guangzhou, in China’s Pearl River Delta region.
Overview
CAN operates two terminals connected by an automated people mover (APM) train. As the main gateway to the Pearl River Delta — one of the most economically significant regions in China — it’s a major connecting hub for travel between mainland China and Southeast Asia, and one of the Chinese airports where eligible travelers can take advantage of extended visa-free transit to explore the city itself. CAN handled approximately 76.37 million passenger trips in 2024, a 20.89% surge on 2023 — only the second time it’s topped 70 million since 2019.
Terminals
- Terminal 1: China Southern Airlines’ primary hub, handling the bulk of domestic and international flights.
- Terminal 2: International flights and SkyTeam alliance partners, connected to Terminal 1 by the automated people mover.
Airlines
China Southern Airlines, China’s largest airline by fleet size, operates its main hub at CAN with an extensive domestic network across the country plus international routes throughout Asia, Australia, and beyond as a SkyTeam member. That hub concentration makes CAN one of the best-connected airports for travel between mainland China and Southeast Asia specifically.
How to Get There
- Guangzhou Metro (APM link): ¥8–10, the cheapest option, connecting directly to Guangzhou’s metro network via the airport’s own APM line in about 40 minutes to the city center.
- Airport Express Bus: ¥17–30 depending on the route, with multiple lines covering different parts of the city, about 45–60 minutes.
- Taxi: ¥100–150 to central Guangzhou, about 40–60 minutes depending on traffic — a comfortable but noticeably pricier option than the metro.
Prices above are indicative and can change — always check current fares with Guangzhou Metro or the airport’s official transport page.
Getting Through Security and Passport Control
- Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 20–30 minutes off-peak, up to 35–50 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 30–45 minutes off-peak, up to 55–80 minutes during peak international departure banks — security at major Chinese airports tends to be thorough, so budget generous time.
- If you’re using the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, have your onward ticket and any required paperwork ready at passport control — the process for visa-free transit travelers is separate from standard immigration and requires specific documentation.
Parking
Both terminals have adjacent short- and long-stay car parks. Given the airport’s scale and distance from the city, most visitors rely on the metro, bus, or taxi rather than driving.
Wifi
Free wifi is available throughout the airport, though registering with your passport number is typically required to connect — a standard requirement at Chinese airports.
Best Times to Arrive
- Domestic flights: 90 minutes before departure is typically enough.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead — security and passport control processing can take longer than at other major hubs, especially during peak periods.
- If you’re arriving to take advantage of visa-free transit, build in extra time at passport control for the additional documentation check specific to that process.
Where to Eat
CAN has an excellent selection of Cantonese dim sum and regional Chinese cuisine alongside international chains, spread across both terminals — a genuine reflection of Guangzhou’s status as the birthplace of Cantonese food culture. At the Pullman hotel, the all-day dining restaurant covers Cantonese specialties, and Taotaoju — a genuinely famous Guangzhou dim sum brand — has a branch inside the terminal itself.
Airport Hotel
The Pullman Guangzhou Baiyun Airport connects to Terminal 1 via a covered skybridge from the third floor — a roughly 30-second walk from the departure gates, no shuttle needed. Travelers arriving at Terminal 2 need a short shuttle instead.
Lounges
- The China Southern Sky Pearl Club lounges are available across Terminal 1 for eligible business/first class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available in both terminals.
Duty-Free Shopping
CAN’s duty-free zone includes Chinese specialties — tea, silk products, and Chinese liquor (baijiu) — alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Long Layover Tips
- With 6+ hours and eligibility for the 144-hour visa-free transit policy (verify your nationality qualifies and bring your onward ticket), central Guangzhou is reachable via the metro in about 40 minutes.
- If staying airside, Terminal 1 has the best mix of lounges and dining given China Southern’s hub presence.
- Given the extra documentation required for visa-free transit, don’t leave that process until the last minute on your way back — arrive at passport control with real buffer time built in.
