Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG) is the busiest airport in Hong Kong and the primary hub of Cathay Pacific, with more than 50 million passengers a year and consistently one of the world’s busiest airports for air cargo. It sits about 34 km west of Hong Kong Island, built on reclaimed land at Chek Lap Kok.
Overview
HKG operates two terminals and functions as one of Asia’s most important connecting hubs, anchored by Cathay Pacific’s extensive long-haul network. The airport’s most distinctive feature is SkyPier, a dedicated ferry terminal integrated into the airport that lets passengers arriving by high-speed ferry from mainland China and Macau transfer directly to their connecting flight — without ever formally entering Hong Kong or clearing its immigration, a genuinely unusual piece of infrastructure not replicated at most airports worldwide. HKIA handled 53.06 million passengers in 2024, a 34.3% surge on 2023 as the airport’s new three-runway system came online, though still at about 71% of its 2018 pre-pandemic peak.
Terminals
- Terminal 1: The main terminal, handling the bulk of Cathay Pacific’s operations and most international carriers.
- Terminal 2 / SkyPier: Handles additional capacity and houses the SkyPier cross-border ferry transfer facility.
Airlines
Cathay Pacific operates its principal hub at HKG, running an extensive long-haul network across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania as a member of the Oneworld alliance. Hong Kong’s strategic position at the heart of East Asia makes HKG one of the most important connecting points in the region for travel between mainland China, the rest of Asia, and destinations worldwide.
Getting There
- Airport Express: 115 HKD, a direct rail line to Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes — the fastest and most reliable option.
- Taxi: Typically 300–400 HKD to Hong Kong Island, about 45 minutes depending on traffic and route (cross-harbour tunnel tolls apply).
- Airport bus: A cheaper option with multiple routes across the territory, about 50–60 minutes depending on destination.
Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always check current fares with MTR Airport Express or your taxi/rideshare option.
Security and Passport Control Wait Times
- Regional flights: Security plus immigration for most mainland China and Macau routes. Typically 15–20 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 25–35 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 25–35 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 40–60 minutes during peak international departure banks.
- HKG handles an extremely high volume of both passenger and cargo traffic — processing is generally efficient despite the scale.
Parking
Both terminal areas have extensive short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage.
Wifi
Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the airport with no time limit.
Best Times to Arrive
- Regional flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure, especially during Cathay Pacific’s peak long-haul departure banks.
- Given the airport’s scale, allow real time to move between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, especially for connections.
Where to Eat
HKG has an excellent selection of Cantonese cuisine and dim sum alongside international chains, spread across both terminals. Inside the Regal Airport Hotel, Rouge covers Cantonese cuisine and Dragon Inn does Shanghainese, alongside Airport Izakaya for Japanese — all open to non-guests.
Airport Hotel
The Regal Airport Hotel is a 2-minute walk from Terminal 1 — genuinely walkable, not a shuttle connection. Beyond Rouge, Dragon Inn, and Airport Izakaya, it has six restaurants and bars in total, including Western options, making it a reasonable base for a long layover even without going into the city.
Lounges
- The Wing, Cathay Pacific’s flagship lounge, is available for eligible first and business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access — regularly ranked among the world’s best airport lounges.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.
Duty-Free Shopping
HKG’s duty-free area is known for luxury goods and Chinese tea alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands, reflecting Hong Kong’s status as a major shopping destination.

Layover Tips
- With 6 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry, Hong Kong Island is reachable via the Airport Express in about 24 minutes.
- If staying airside, Cathay Pacific’s The Wing lounge is worth the effort to access if you’re eligible — it’s genuinely one of the best airport lounges in the world.
- If your connection involves an arrival by ferry from mainland China or Macau via SkyPier, note that you’ll transfer directly without clearing Hong Kong immigration — plan accordingly if you had intended to actually enter the territory.
