Istanbul Airport (IATA: IST) is one of the largest airports in the world by terminal floor space and has become Europe’s busiest international airport, handling more than 84 million passengers a year. IST operates as one mega-terminal with five concourses:

Because it’s a single building, there’s no need to transfer between separate terminal structures — but the sheer size means budgeting real walking time between concourses, especially for connections.

Airlines

Turkish Airlines dominates IST as its home hub, operating one of the most extensive international route networks of any airline, with particularly strong connectivity to Africa and Central Asia that’s harder to find via other European hubs. Budget carrier Pegasus also has a significant presence, primarily for domestic and regional routes.

How to Get There

• M11 Metro: Around ₺40 (with an İstanbulkart; a higher amount is deducted and refunded automatically), running directly from the airport to Gayrettepe on the European side in about 35 minutes, with onward connections into the wider metro network.
• Havaist Bus: ₺318–₺468 depending on destination, serving 12 points across the city including Taksim (~90 minutes) and the Otogar bus terminal (~45 minutes) — a good option if your destination isn’t directly on the metro line.
• Taxi: Roughly ₺1,500–₺2,000 (about $32–$43) to the European-side city center including tolls, about 40–60 minutes depending on traffic — IST is notably far from central Istanbul, so factor in real travel time.

Getting Through Security and Passport Control

• Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 15–25 minutes off-peak, up to 30–40 minutes during busy periods.
• International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 30–45 minutes off-peak, but can stretch to 60–90 minutes during peak departure banks — IST’s scale means queues can look long but often move steadily; still, budget generously given the airport’s size.
• Given the concourse layout, add extra time for walking between security and distant gates — this is one of the largest airport buildings in the world, and distances are genuinely significant.

Parking

IST has extensive parking directly connected to the terminal. Given the airport’s scale, clear signage helps, but pre-booking online for busy travel periods is worth considering.

Free wifi is available throughout IST with a time-limited free session; an eSIM with a Turkish data plan is a reliable backup for longer connectivity needs.

Best Times to Arrive

• Domestic flights: 90 minutes before departure is generally sufficient.
• International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead, especially for Turkish Airlines’ peak evening departure banks, when the airport’s scale and passenger volume combine to make things busiest.
• Given IST’s size, add extra buffer time purely for walking between security and your gate — this is a meaningfully bigger airport than most passengers are used to.

IST has a strong selection of Turkish food — from quick simit and tea stands to full sit-down restaurants serving kebabs and Turkish breakfast spreads — alongside the usual international chains. Turkish tea houses scattered through the concourses are a genuinely pleasant way to pass time.

Lounges

• Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge, one of the largest and most highly rated airline lounges in the world, spanning multiple floors with extensive dining and rest areas — available with eligible tickets or elite status.
