Jakarta's greater metropolitan area, Jabodetabek, is home to more than 30 million people — more than the population of many entire countries. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is the primary air gateway to this vast urban region, making it one of the busiest and most essential pieces of transport infrastructure anywhere in Southeast Asia.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (IATA: CGK) is Indonesia’s main gateway and the hub of Garuda Indonesia, with more than 54 million passengers a year. It sits about 20 km northwest of central Jakarta.
Overview
CGK operates three terminals and serves a genuinely staggering urban region: greater Jakarta, known as Jabodetabek, is home to more than 30 million people — a population larger than most entire countries. That scale makes CGK one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia and a critical piece of infrastructure for one of the world’s largest urban agglomerations. CGK handled 54.8 million passengers in 2024, a 7% increase on the year before as Indonesia’s aviation sector continued its post-pandemic recovery.
Terminals
- Terminal 1: Handles domestic flights, including a major share of Lion Air’s operations.
- Terminal 2: The hub for Garuda Indonesia’s domestic and select international routes.
- Terminal 3: The newest and largest terminal, handling most international traffic and Garuda’s long-haul network.
Airlines
Garuda Indonesia, the national flag carrier, operates its primary hub at CGK, connecting Jakarta to the rest of Indonesia’s vast archipelago and to international destinations across Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Lion Air, one of Asia’s largest low-cost carriers, also bases extensive domestic and regional operations here, together making CGK one of the most connected airports in the region.
Getting There
- Damri bus: ~70,000–150,000 IDR, with direct routes to multiple parts of Jakarta, about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic and destination.
- Airport train (Railink): ~70,000 IDR, a direct rail link to Sudirman Baru (BNI City) station, about 50 minutes.
- Taxi/rideshare: ~150,000–250,000 IDR, though timing is highly variable given Jakarta’s notoriously heavy traffic, about 30–60 minutes.
Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always check current fares with Railink or your rideshare app.
Security and Passport Control Wait Times
- Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 15–20 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 25–35 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 20–30 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 35–50 minutes during peak international departure banks.
- Given CGK’s overall passenger volume, building in extra time during peak morning and evening travel windows is worth the caution.
Parking
All three terminals have short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage.
Wifi
Free wifi is available in the terminal with a limited free session.
Best Times to Arrive
- Domestic flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure, especially during peak periods.
- Given Jakarta’s traffic can be genuinely unpredictable, build in significant buffer time for the journey to the airport itself, not just terminal processing.
Where to Eat
CGK has a good selection of Indonesian cuisine alongside international chains, spread across all three terminals. At the Anara Airport Hotel, Selasih Restaurant serves Asian and international dishes for both breakfast and dinner service.
Airport Hotel
The Anara Airport Hotel is the only hotel actually located inside Terminal 3, positioned at the international end — a genuine transit hotel, not a nearby property. There’s also the Digital Airport Hotel, a capsule-style option in the same terminal for shorter transit stays.
Lounges
- The Garuda Indonesia Lounge is available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.
Duty-Free Shopping
CGK’s duty-free area includes genuinely Indonesian specialties — local coffee and batik textiles — alongside the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Layover Tips
- With 5 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry (Indonesia offers visa-on-arrival for many nationalities), central Jakarta is reachable via the airport train in about 50 minutes.
- If staying airside, CGK’s Indonesian dining options are a solid introduction to the country’s cuisine even on a short connection.
- Given Jakarta’s traffic, a longer layover doesn’t necessarily mean more time in the city — factor in real round-trip travel time before committing to a city visit.
