Heathrow operates four active terminals — Terminal 1 permanently closed in 2015. Unlike more compact hub airports, Heathrow’s terminals are spread across a large site and aren’t within walking distance of each other; moving between them, even airside, requires a dedicated shuttle train or bus. Always check your terminal well before travel, since it directly affects which train station or drop-off point you need.

Airlines

British Airways dominates Heathrow as its home hub and the anchor of the oneworld alliance in Europe, based at Terminal 5. Virgin Atlantic, United, and Qatar Airways are also major operators, alongside dozens of international flag carriers — Heathrow has more long-haul international connections than almost any other airport in the world.

How to Get There

• Elizabeth Line: £15.50 flat fare regardless of time of day, direct to Paddington in about 30–35 minutes, continuing across central London without changing trains.
• Heathrow Express: £25 for a walk-up single (as low as £10 if booked ~90 days ahead), the fastest option at just 15 minutes non-stop to Paddington.
• Piccadilly Line (London Underground): ~£5.90 from Zone 1, the cheapest rail option but the slowest — about 50–60 minutes with many stops.
• Taxi: A metered black cab typically runs £75–£130 depending on traffic and destination; Uber and other ride-hailing apps tend to be somewhat cheaper, roughly £55–£90. About 45–75 minutes depending on traffic.

Getting Through Security and Passport Control

• UK/domestic flights: Security only. Typically 20–30 minutes off-peak, up to 40–50 minutes during morning and early-evening waves.
• International flights: Security plus UK Border Force passport control (or eGates for eligible passport holders). Typically 35–50 minutes off-peak, but can stretch to 60–90 minutes during peak periods — Heathrow has had a reputation for longer-than-average queues at various points, though eGates have helped for many nationalities.
• Given the distances between terminals, if you’re connecting between airlines in different terminals, budget significant extra time beyond the security wait itself for the inter-terminal transfer.

Parking

All four terminals have adjacent short- and long-stay car parks, plus more affordable off-site “Long Stay” options connected by free shuttle. Pre-booking online is significantly cheaper than the walk-up rate.

Best Times to Arrive

• UK/domestic flights: 2 hours before departure is generally recommended.

Where to Eat

• British Airways lounges across Terminal 5 (including a Concorde Room for top-tier passengers) — among the more extensive lounge networks of any single airline globally.

Heathrow’s duty-free areas are known for British brands — whisky, fashion, and gourmet food — alongside the usual international luxury names, particularly strong in Terminal 5’s departures area.

Long Layover Tips

• With 6+ hours and a visa situation that allows UK entry, central London is reachable in as little as 15 minutes via the Heathrow Express — but factor in the return security queue, which can be substantial.
• If staying airside, Terminal 5 has by far the most comfortable seating, dining, and shopping for a long wait.
• Given Heathrow’s terminal layout, if your layover involves a terminal change, treat it as a genuine leg of your journey — check the shuttle schedule rather than assuming a quick walk.
