The only airport where most visitors never reach the capital

Velana International Airport occupies its own entire island, Hulhulé, just across the water from Malé. But for most arriving passengers, the capital city is genuinely irrelevant to their trip — they transfer directly from the plane to a seaplane or speedboat bound for a private resort island, often without ever officially setting foot in the country's main population center at all.

Velana International Airport (IATA: MLE) is the Maldives’ main gateway and the hub of Maldivian, the national carrier, with more than 7 million passengers a year. It occupies Hulhulé Island, connected by bridge to Malé, the capital, about 2 km away.

Overview

MLE operates a single terminal and holds a genuinely unusual distinction: the entire airport sits on its own island, and for most travelers, the capital city it’s nominally attached to barely factors into the trip. The vast majority of arriving passengers transfer straight from their international flight to a domestic seaplane or resort speedboat, heading directly to a private island resort without ever officially visiting Malé at all. MACL, the airport operator, reported an 8 million passenger total for 2025, a 7% increase on 2024 — working backward from that growth rate puts 2024 at roughly 7.5 million, though MACL hasn’t published that exact figure itself.

Terminals

MLE operates a single integrated terminal handling both regional and international traffic, including the full Maldivian network, with dedicated seaplane and speedboat docks immediately adjacent for resort transfers.

Airlines

Maldivian, the national carrier, operates its hub at MLE, connecting the capital to the country’s many inhabited and resort islands via domestic flights and seaplane operations. Manta Air, a private seaplane operator, runs an extensive network specifically built around direct resort transfers, reflecting the airport’s unique role as a transit point rather than a final destination for most visitors.

Getting There

  • Taxi (via Sinamalé Bridge): ~50–100 MVR, crossing the bridge to central Malé, about 15–20 minutes — relevant mainly for visitors actually staying in the capital rather than a resort.
  • Speedboat resort transfer: Timing varies hugely, from 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the resort’s distance, often included in the resort booking.
  • Seaplane resort transfer: 20–45 minutes, genuinely scenic, but operates daylight hours only — a key planning constraint for late arrivals.

Prices above are approximate and subject to change — always confirm resort transfer arrangements directly with your accommodation.

Security and Passport Control Wait Times

  • Regional flights: Security only for most nearby inter-island routes. Typically 10–15 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 20–30 minutes during busy periods.
  • International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 20–30 minutes during off-peak hours, up to 35–50 minutes during peak international departure banks.
  • Given how many arrivals connect straight to a seaplane, MLE’s transfer process between international arrivals and the seaplane terminal can add meaningful time beyond standard airport processing.

Parking

The terminal has limited short- and long-stay parking, with clear signage, though most visitors don’t require it given the resort-transfer model.

Wifi

Free wifi is available in the terminal with a limited free session.

Best Times to Arrive

  • Regional flights: Arrive 2 hours before departure.
  • International flights: Arrive 3 hours before departure, especially during peak departure periods.
  • Given that seaplane transfers only operate during daylight hours, plan international arrival times carefully — a late-evening landing may mean an overnight stay near the airport before a seaplane transfer the next morning.

Where to Eat

MLE has a good selection of Maldivian and international seafood alongside more standard airport dining options. At the Hulhulé Island Hotel, Uduvilaa is a top-floor restaurant with glass walls overlooking the sea, and Faru Coffee House runs a 24-hour menu of European, Japanese, and Italian dishes.

Airport Hotel

The Hulhulé Island Hotel sits about half a mile from the terminal, with a complimentary shuttle running round the clock — not walkable, but genuinely the closest and most convenient option for a layover that doesn’t fit a resort transfer. Beyond Uduvilaa and Faru Coffee House, it has direct access to a private beach.

Lounges

  • The Maldivian Airport Lounge is available for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
  • Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available.

Duty-Free Shopping

MLE’s duty-free area is genuinely notable for watches and jewelry alongside local handicrafts, in addition to the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Layover Tips

  • With 5 hours or more and a visa situation that allows entry, central Malé is reachable via taxi over the Sinamalé Bridge in about 15–20 minutes — a rare chance to see the capital rather than head straight to a resort.
  • If staying airside, MLE’s seaplane dock area offers a genuinely striking view of the operation that makes this airport unique — turquoise water and aircraft on floats rather than a runway.
  • Given that most visitors’ trips are built entirely around resort transfers, confirm your seaplane or speedboat timing well before arrival — daylight-only seaplane operations are a real scheduling constraint most travelers don’t anticipate.
