Incheon International Airport (IATA: ICN) is South Korea’s main international gateway and Korean Air’s principal hub, handling more than 66 million passengers a year — one of the busiest airports in the world. It sits about 48 km (30 mi) west of central Seoul.
Overview
ICN operates two terminals and is consistently ranked among the world’s best airports, largely thanks to genuinely unusual on-site amenities: an indoor ice skating rink, a casino, a spa, indoor gardens, and a golf course are all built into the terminal complex — turning what’s normally dead layover time into something closer to a destination in itself. Incheon International Airport Corporation reported approximately 74.04 million passengers for 2024, a 4.1% increase on 2023 and above the airport’s pre-pandemic 2019 baseline.
Terminals
- Terminal 1: A mix of international carriers including many foreign airlines and Asiana Airlines.
- Terminal 2: Korean Air’s main hub terminal and its SkyTeam partners, opened in 2018 to add capacity.
Airlines
Korean Air operates its principal hub at ICN, anchoring Terminal 2 with an extensive domestic network across South Korea plus international long-haul routes as a SkyTeam member. Asiana Airlines also maintains a significant presence in Terminal 1. That dual-carrier structure makes ICN one of the best-connected airports in Northeast Asia.
How to Get There
- AREX (Airport Railroad Express): KRW 4,150–9,500 depending on all-stop or express service, about 43–66 minutes to Seoul Station.
- Taxi: KRW 55,000–70,000 to central Seoul, about 60–70 minutes depending on traffic — comfortable but the most expensive option given the airport’s distance.
- Kakao T: Korea’s main ride-hailing app, generally comparable in price to a taxi, about 60–70 minutes.
Prices above are indicative and can change — always check current fares with AREX or your ride-hailing app.
Getting Through Security and Passport Control
- Domestic flights: Security only. Typically 15–20 minutes off-peak, up to 25–35 minutes during busy periods.
- International flights: Security plus passport control. Typically 25–35 minutes off-peak, up to 40–60 minutes during peak international departure banks.
- ICN is renowned for efficient processing despite its massive passenger volume, reflecting years of consistently topping global airport service rankings.
Parking
Both terminals have extensive parking, with clear signage for short- and long-stay options.
Wifi
Free, unlimited wifi is available throughout the airport with no time limit.
Best Times to Arrive
- Domestic flights: 90 minutes before departure is typically enough.
- International flights: Arrive 3 hours ahead, especially for Korean Air’s peak long-haul departure banks.
- Given ICN’s distance from Seoul, build in extra time for the journey to the airport itself, not just the terminal processing.
Where to Eat
ICN has an excellent selection of Korean cuisine alongside international chains, spread across both terminals. At the nearby Grand Hyatt, Restaurant 8 packs eight distinct dining concepts — from sushi to yakitori to noodles — into one venue, and Grand Café runs a European-and-Asian buffet.
Airport Hotel
The Grand Hyatt Incheon is a 3-minute free shuttle ride from Terminal 1 — not walkable, but genuinely fast. Beyond Restaurant 8 and Grand Café, it has the Swell Lounge for coffee and light meals, making it a comfortable base for a long layover even without heading into Seoul.
Lounges
- The Korean Air KAL Lounge is available across Terminal 2 for eligible business class passengers, elite status holders, or paid access.
- Several Priority Pass-affiliated lounges are also available in Terminal 1.
Duty-Free Shopping
ICN’s duty-free zone is famous for Korean skincare and cosmetics, alongside ginseng products and the usual international fashion, cosmetics, and electronics brands.

Long Layover Tips
- With 6+ hours and a visa situation permitting entry, central Seoul is reachable via AREX express train in about 43 minutes.
- If staying airside, don’t skip the ice rink, spa, or indoor gardens — ICN is genuinely designed to make a long layover an experience rather than dead time.
- Given ICN’s distance from Seoul, weigh whether a full city trip is worth it versus enjoying the airport’s own extensive facilities, especially on a shorter layover.
